Golf Sports Blog > Golf Girl's Diary: The LPGA Takes Positive Actions in Tough Times
[Golf Girl's Diary] I am sure the LPGA Commissioner is going to take the heat for this last lost of sponsorship. I hear and read where she is rearranging staff to help sponsors obtain value from their sponsorships and putting pressure on the players to be more participative with sponsors needs...but the bottomline is, LPGA and PGA are going to have to find ways for sponsors to get a huge ROI and be more than someone who writes large checks.

[Waggle Room] The Reality of Life on the LPGA Tour - Waggle Room: On 16 in the final round, Erica told me of another tournament that was lost this year because a sponsor pulled out. The ladies are playing all the tournaments because they don't know how much longer they will be around.
[The Games People Play] The LPGA and the Language of Diversity: At first glance Jin seems the epitome of the type of player the proposed LPGA sanctions might have targeted, yet her personality and smile were as much a revelation last season as was her remarkable talent on the golf course. There is absolutely nothing to suggest her appeal would be enhanced in any way by a greater mastery of the English language.
[Wizbang Sports] The LPGA Ginn Open is dead (Wizbang Sports): And I believe the Shoprite was a relatively successful tournament before it was given the shaft. How don't know what businesses will survive this severe economic crisis but I know people have to eat so it seems like Shoprite might have remained a viable sponsor on some level.
[Waggle Room] LPGA Tour & Golf Channel Sign 10 Year Agreement - Waggle Room: Golf Channel will carry three- and four-round coverage of domestic events, including one major championship, and international feeds of LPGA global events, as well as early round coverage of events that will have weekend coverage on other networks. The network also will continue with exclusive rights to the biennial Solheim Cup, pitting the U.S. against Europe.
[Golfweek Commentary] Golf | Lets make a deal: As part of the contract, JBC will assume title sponsorship rights for next months Phoenix LPGA International. They also will underwrite an event on the 2010-2014 schedules in Southern California, as well as create and operate an official Korean-language web site of the LPGA.
[Mr Business Golf] The Troubles of Golf | Mr Business Golf: Just think if a business, any business with employees, put every employee, from the receptionist to the forklift drivers in S&R, out on the golf course once a month. It doesnt matter if they are playing in an organize outing with clients or just a day to get away, what is achieved, if done correctly, will produce an ROI in ways many business people would not realize golf could generate.
[Jason Erwin] The World of Golf: Stanford Financial Group which sponsors events both on the PGA and LPGA tours was indicted in a fraud case. Stanford has be accused of an 8 billion dollar scheme involving certificates of deposit.
[BC Golf News] BC Golf News | Tiger Is Back But The Sponsors Are Leaving: Shares of Callaway Golf Co., which introduced the Big Bertha steel-headed driver in 1991, are at their lowest in 16 years and underperformed the Standard and Poor's Midcap Consumer Discretionary Index by 18 percentage points over the past 12 months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at 12,269 on June 16, the last time Woods played in a tournament, and finished at 7,351 yesterday.
[General Golf Talk] Who will be the new Tournament Sponsors?: But no matter how ineffective these guys were/are they aren't criminals like the Bank CEOs and the heads of Fanny and Freddy who are given a free pass and are now being given free money, which just encourages them further to cook the books so they can take huge bonuses and golden parachutes.. The sad part of the whole thing is this is probably the best top to bottom line up that GM has ever produced and the inovative Volt will never see the light of day let alone the fuel cell vehicles that they presently have in CA fleets...
[Garry Smits's blog] Jacksonville.com: Sports: Blogs: Chip Shots: LPGA will require ...: The American Junior Golf Association has a rule that requires spectators and players to speak English at all times during competition, because there were complaints that parents of foreign-born players were shouting swing advice or club selection to players in their native language. The Rules of Golf prohibit players receiving swing advice from anyone other than a caddie, and parents are not allowed to caddie in the AJGA.
[Ohio State Headline News] Blog Post: Sindelar Father and Son Connect on Course and in ...: Maybe it’s appreciating the time that is invested into maintaining a golf course, or learning from rookie mistakes that previous LPGA players have. Or maybe it’s when one of them is driving though Oklahoma sometime and gets a flat tire, they can pull off the road and change it without a second thought.
[The Golf Blog] The Golf Blog: How can and should the LPGA cash in?: But still they will be at a huge disadvantage because the real gap between the LPGA and PGA tours is the short game and more specifically, how difficult the greens are and where the pins are placed. Put your average PGA and LPGA player in the middle of the fairway 100 to 150 yards out and the PGA guys are going routinely hit approaches closer and routinely make more putts.
[Tom Yantz | On the Tee] LPGA 'English' Rule Has Lots of Folks Talking - Tom Yantz | On the Tee: But I maintain it's not unreasonable to expect players to learn enough English to be functional with fans, sponsors, playing partners and the media while earning a livelihood in this country. It's not like the LPGA is asking them to be fluent in English or the second coming of Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis or Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez, a Mexican-American.
[Golf for Beginners] Golf for Beginners - Can Michelle Wie save the LPGA? Also, one way ...: In 2006, the USGA could have decided to givbe MW an exemption based on a performance that would have earned her an exemption from her 2005 LPGA events had she been a member of the LPGA--and remember she was too young to be a member. Instead they let themselves be influenced by the complaints over the previous exemption, and only gave MW an exemption when she also performed well enough in a couple of early LPGA events to have qualified had she been an LPGA member.
[The Marmot's Hole] Effective 2009, LPGA Members Must Speak Passable English | The ...: My father is retired and plays golf all the time, has the golf channel on 24/7 (except when Olbermann is on) he and his golfing buddies HATE what the LPGA has become because of all the Koreans, not because of their golf skills but because of the lack of personality of them which in part is due to their lack of English proficiency. I bet the ratings for their tournaments are minuscule, heck the LPGA Championship (a major) isn’t even on a US network
[Bugatchi shirts- Embroidered golf shirts] LPGA Tour to require English: Deputy commissioner Libba Galloway told The Associated Press, “There are more fans, more media and more sponsors. We want to help our athletes as best we can succeed off the golf course as well as on it.”
[The Golf Blog] The Golf Blog: The business of sport: money, looks, and talent: Wie is not doing well against the men, but to say that the women are "punishing" her is absurd. Her worst finish against the women was at the British Open, and her play there wasn't as ugly as Karrie Webb, who played far worse and missed the cut.
[BBC Blog Network] BBC - Mihir Bose: ECB hit for six by Stanford: That is, that ECB put its faith and its reputation on the line in 1 man, who didn't represent a country nor was governed by the ICC, and it therefore has to take the blame when the strategy of putting all your eggs in one basket fails yet again. There were lots of ways this deal could have sour, even if fraud is one of the most shocking, but much poorer cricket boards than us had the foresight to put their principals first.
